Dental Hygiene

Good dental hygiene involves teamwork between yourself at home, your dentist and your hygienist. As well as regular dental appointments, you should make regular appointments with the practice hygienist – every six months, or more frequently if your dentist or hygienist advises.

At Askew Dental Care we offer direct access to our practice hygienist, Eman Beck, to practice members, to help you keep your dental hygiene in top condition. Eman is a fully-qualified and highly-experienced dental hygienist, known for her gentle work and her skill in working with nervous and anxious patients.

When you visit the hygienist, she will professionally clean your teeth to remove all traces of plaque using a range of special equipment and pastes, in a process known as a scale and polish. This is important even for patients with an excellent home hygiene regime, as there are often areas of the mouth that are hard to reach when brushing at home.

A vital part of the hygienist's job is to advise you on ways you can improve your home care routine. This may include your brushing technique, use of special products such as floss or interdental brushes, and how certain foods and drinks – particularly sugary or acidic foods and carbonated drinks including water – can affect your dental health.

Your hygienist also provides a vital role in identifying and treating the symptoms of gum disease, which is common and experienced by many people at some point in their lives, and which can be treated with prudent dental hygiene if spotted early. Bad breath, which is often a symptom of gum disease, can also be treated by your hygienist.

Children also benefit from visiting the hygienist, with tips about tooth brushing and diet presented in an easy-to-understand, age-appropriate manner. Patients with restorations such as dental implants, bridges or dentures, and those undergoing orthodontic treatment, will have specific hygiene requirements that your hygienist will be able to help you with.
