Dental Implants

Dental implants are the only permanent way to replace missing teeth. These small titanium screws, placed directly in your jaw bone in a minor procedure here at our Hammersmith practice, act as bionic tooth roots, meshing with your jaw bone over time and providing firm support for replacement teeth in the form of crowns, dentures or bridges.

How implant treatment works

If you are interested in replacing your missing teeth with dental implants, you should book a consultation with an implant dentist at our Hammersmith practice. Your dentist will examine your mouth and use x-rays and scans as necessary to aid with treatment planning and implant placement.

Patients who have worn traditional dentures for a number of years may have experienced some bone loss, which happens when the jaw bone resorbs without the tooth roots in place. Thanks to advances in implantology, it is now usually possible for patients who have experienced bone loss to have implants – they may just need another procedure first.

When the lower jaw does not have enough bone density to support implants, a bone graft may be required to rebuild the bone, while a sinus lift may be used to provide enough bone density in the upper jaw. Your dentist will be able to assess the density of your bone at your initial consultation, and will advise you if you need one of these additional procedures.

Following careful planning, your implants will be placed in your jaw in a minor operation, which is usually carried out under local anaesthetic. Your implants will then be left to heal and bond with your bone for approximately three months. Once adequate bonding has taken place, your permanent new teeth will be fitted; for a single tooth it is most common to fit a single crown, while for multiple teeth bridges or dentures may be used.
